I am part of the fibre to the premises team. We provide either an over head fibre cable or an under ground fibre cable to a customers premises. We then install fibre equipment inside the property that connects to the external provision. This provides full fibre internet to our customers on behalf of multiple service providers.
I have learned multiple skills since starting my training and continue to learn whilst on the job in a practical setting. I am able to work with fibre equipment and can provide a full installation. I can climb telegraph poles and access underground ducting safely and efficiently. I continue to develop my customer service skills.
Since starting with Openreach I have been given fantastic training and support. I have been working alongside a team who encourage growth and support in all aspects of learning. The apprenticeship programme is broken down into sessions that engage and support me through every step of my professional training journey.
The apprenticeship programme is well planned, structured and presented. The tutors present all learning material in a clear concise manner. Each session is pre planned and delivered professionally. Supporting materials are given for reference so I can access after each session and continue my portfolio and training in my own time.
My Manager, patch leads and team members offer a fantastic level of support. I am in regular contact with my Manager who supports any time needed for learning or development. The patch leads also offer support in the work place including safety checks. My team members have provided a buddy system where you can ask questions or for help/ support at any time.
My training provider is in contact at regular intervals. This includes our online teams meetings for training sessions, as well as email communication and support at any time if we have any questions or need additional support. All training is delivered professionally and personably, and followed up with supporting documents.
I feel very lucky to be taking part in the apprenticeship programme. I have gained a lot of skills and valuable training that Iuse in my day to day role. These skills are backed up with a portfolio that I will be able to use throughout my career and hopefully expand my knowledge in time.
Due to covid I haven't been able to take part in a lot of social activities or events. I am looking forward to being part of the wider professional team as I enjoy extra curricular activities including charity events and fundraising, sporting events and am keen to engage in any other activities available.
Yes
I would recommend working for Openreach to a friend as they are a very diverse and supporting company to work for. As a female in an engineering role with no experience I feel like I have been welcomed and treat equally as part of the wider team. The support from the whole team is fantastic.
I think it is important to research the different roles within the company as there is so much variety. It is important to understand what will be expected of you in each role as it can be quite demanding, but also extremely rewarding. The company background is very interesting, and good to know!
