  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • One day per week, I travel to university to attend my course. On the other days of the week, I complete placements. Each placement takes 3 months, and then changes to another placement. This gives us apprentices experience of all the departments we may come to work with in the future.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • There are multiple skills learned throughout this apprenticeship. Not only are we learning how to do the jobs we are being trained to do (practical knowledge), we are also learning how to work professionally: a training process University can't provide. The specific skills we are taught change from place to place, but any skills you want to personally develop will be taken into consideration.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am really enjoying my programme; there's no place I'd rather be! It covers everything I believe I will need to know to become a successful engineer, while being very entertaining also. It's amazing to feel and see that you're making a difference, rather than just working on an assignment that won't make a change in the world.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • This programme is very well structured. The overall apprenticeship structure is described from day 1 so there are no surprises. Although there is a lot of volatility, meaning placement plans can quickly change, there will always be something to do and someone to assist. All college working plans are presented and greed at the start of the year.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I believe I will receive as much as I ask for, as well as standard check in meetings to see if everything's alright. I haven't had to ask for much support in the past personally, but I know exactly who to go to and when. I know lots of others have been given a lot of support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Again, as much as I ask for. I have come to find there is a lot of learning for yourself in my course, considering I am only in lessons one day a week. But again, we have routinely review meetings to ensure all is well, and I know who to go to if I require support.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The training course is very relevant for us. In previous years, they found the course wasn't as relevant as it could be, so it was changed/updated to ensure we were receiving the most relevant education for our roles. This college work also gives us experience with working to deadlines and being personally organized.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, although most of these have been put on hold with the interest of our personal safety being ultimately important. Not only are there additional events to get involved in, if anyone feels like the company would benefit from us going to an external event, we will be allowed to do so.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BMW Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have multiple times, because of all the reasons above. It's amazing to work for such a big company with (quite literally) a world of opportunities. The base pay is amazing and it's very likely there will be a job waiting for us at the end of the apprenticeship.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • Try to get as much work experience as possible. Work experience is a two way thing: BMW Group want to make sure you will work hard for them, but you also need to make sure you suit the environment with them. This is why work experience really helps the recruitment team.
