Transport Planning Technician Apprentice Review

My role involved working on a variety of Transport related projects performing a range of tasks and activities ranging from network modelling to report writing to community engagement. I will also be required to go on site visits and have experience in surveying various forms of data and processing it into a more meaningful manner.

I have learned a wide range of new skills as well as developing existing ones. I have learned how to do microsimulation modelling to assess traffic flows in a specified area as well as vehicle tracking in CAD for swept path analysis reports. I have also developed my report writing skills as well as my communication skills through many methods of communication.

I have enjoyed the programme a lot. My employer has been extremely supportive of me in both personal and professional matters as well as ensuring that I am constantly developing my knowledge and skill set and exposing me to new areas when opportunities arise. This has helped me to expand my professional network and has come in useful on more than one occasion

The programme is clearly outlined and is very well organised and structured. There have been times where aspects of the academic side have been communicated fairly last minute and has caused some concern and stress, particularly during the enrolment stage. Everything on the professional side of my apprenticeship has been very well organised with meetings taking place regularly to check on progress and how various things are.

I have received vast amounts of support from my employer. I have had personal issues affect me during my apprenticeship and they have always been there to help and guide me through them offering advice but not making me do things and approaching all issues sensitively in the most professional manner

My training provider offers a large amount of support and often hosts sessions to discuss matters and provide updates. As mentioned previously, sometimes communication has been slow but we can also contact a tutor if we ever have any concerns, although my attempts to contact haven't actually met a response as of yet.

My qualification has provided me with the knowledge that has allowed me to understand what is being said in high level meetings whilst also understanding why certain processes are being carried out and decisions made. Considering when I first started I had no knowledge of my job role I now feel comfortable performing various tasks with little guidance (except when doing something for the first time)

There are often extra curricular activities including events put on by TPS and social events on a somewhat regular basis (every couple of months). Due to COVID and my distance to the office, sports and related social activities in person haven't been possible however my employer has often put on virtual social events ranging from a virtual pub call to a virtual Christmas event

They are the most professional and supportive company I have worked for and have provided me with a new lease on life as well as allowing me to now feel as though I am accomplishing something and making something of myself often. I would also recommend them as I found it really easy to settle in which, for a socially awkward person, was a big thing for me

If you have previously worked for another planning firm or consultancy it may initially be difficult to adapt to, or so I have heard, as we have our own way of doing things which tends to differ from other companies. However, to offset that they are very appreciative and take all thoughts and ideas on board when discussing a subject
