I provide broadband fibre optic cable from a telephone exchange to the customers premises. I run from an exchange to a node underground, to a splitter and finally to a customers property. As a fibre jointer I maintain and upgrade the current fibre network. I am also responsible for fault finding and repair
Everything about my role is brand new. This is my first engineering role and it has provided me a substantial amount of training and new skills. I had loads of transferable skills to bring to Openreach as I came from a. Customer service background. Everything from waste management, traffic management and roadworks signs and guarding. Splicing fibre cables and building new connections for customers
I absolutely love the programme I am on. The initial eleven weeks training was extremely beneficial and thorough. I have the upmost respect for the learning and development department and their staff for their patience, understanding, knowledge and experience. I absolutely love my job. It is the first job I have ever had that I am legitimately proud of.
The training programme is incredibly well structured and provides all new starters with many different backgrounds a solid start their careers with Openreach. I know where my career will take me over the next 35 years. I know already which routes I can take and what options I have ahead of me.
Openreach has one of the best support networks I have ever experienced. Trainers, colleagues and peers as well as the management team are always at the other end of the phone to talk to you if you need help or advice. Everybody has been very helpful so far and have doubt that will change
We have a dedicated tutor who works through our apprenticeship with us. It is in small groups of six people which allows the trainer to focus properly on all of us as we progress through the syllabus on to qualification. It is one of the better experiences I have had in a job
The qualification opens a huge amount of doors as far as career progression is concerned. Once I am a qualified engineer the possibilities are endless within this company. You are encouraged to push your own career pathway and make decisions regarding your role and where you want to be which I think is brilliant
Currently there are no extra curricular activities that I am aware of due to COVID-19 however I have been told by colleagues that all sorts of social events, sporting events, sponsorships for charities happen all year round in a normal environment. Activities that I intend on taking part in when we can
Yes
OpenreCh is the first job I have been proud of. It is the first job I believe I can make a solid career of. I can see myself working for this business For the rest of my life and I know a lot of people who would love to be in that position.
My best advice is to focus on your development. Your managers will not do the work for you. Push yourself and you will achieve here. You are trusted with huge amounts of responsibility and the job satisfaction is far better than any other role I have had. Training is comprehensive and the money is good
