I am a level 3 apprentice for Jaguar Land Rover. My programmer is electrical installation and I am currently in my first year in my 7th month with my training provider, Make UK. On a day to day basis I work in workshops carrying out different electrical jobs. At the start of the course I was taught other workshops like Bench, PLC, Lean etc.
I have learnt many new skills since I have been on thi apprenticeship. I have learnt basic hand fitting skills, which I has to apply in the workshop Bench. In PLC I learnt a good understanding of how PLC's work and how to use ladder code. In Lean I learnt the principles of 5S and how to save costs whilst running a business. In Electricals I have learnt how to wire up boards from both Domestic and Industrial sides.
I really enjoy my programme as I believe I am making good progress towards my end goal of becoming an electrician. The tutors have been really helpful, also they are very good at sharing there knowledge to teach us. Also I have met some reall good friends here who I love to work with.
I think my programme is organised well as we have a timetable of what we are doing each week in college, and we also know the last week of college. The plan for after college has already been communicated to us that we will be in groups of 3's carrying out different placements. Considering we have been in a lockdown I believe that JLR did very well as the college was shut but insteas of letting us sit at home doing nothing, they brought us in plant to do some on the job training.
We do get support from our manager who we report to at the end of each week, and he will deal with any problems we have. A couple of months ago there wasn't much support as our manager left the business and they hadn't assigned us a manager for a few weeks, however since then we were given a new manager and he has supporte us very well so far.
I have received a lot of support when doing exams. My tutor always offers some extra teaching if we feel we need it to try and achieve with the grade we want. We are very well looked after and I think that we will achive the grades we want at the end of the course.
I think it does help me perform better in my role as the qualification I learn is all about electricals and I learn a lot of the theory side. This really helps me with my electrical work in the workshop as I have a better knowledge of what I'm wiring up and why it all works.
Currently there are no extra curricular activities due to Covid which is a shame. However when we first started this course the group was taken on an outward bounds trip. During this day we did numerous acitivites like absailing and rockclimbing etc. This was really good day to break the ice in the group, and everyone got talking to eachother.
Yes
I believe Jaguar Land Rover is a good stable company, where you have a rel good chance to progress. They have many jobs doing different aspects, so whatever you prefer doing, you can show off your skills in that area. Also they make one of the best cars i the world and to be a part of that is a big achievement for me.
I would say to be yourself and try to complete all the tests to your full ability. If you have an interview just be confident and composed, try to sell your profile to the interviewer. Also try to get some work experience in engineering or JLR if you havent already as this can really help you when applying.
