  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Cash flow forecasting, bank reconciliations, aged debt analysis, invoice queries, Charitable Funds accounts, Payroll deductions pay-overs, month end accruals preparation, assisting with NHS agreement of balance exercise, KPI monitoring and reporting of external financial services provider, developing Procurement processes, preparing papers for year end accounts and audit requirements.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've improved my communication skills by attending meetings and creating reports for senior colleagues. I've gained a better understanding of the NHS finance system and processes by assisting with the interim and final year end external audits.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy studying with Kaplan on the on demand course. I can fit it in around work and home at a time that suits me. The tutorial videos provide a good basic understanding of the topics which can be built upon by doing the questions in the workbooks.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The course is well organised and each module is broken down into manageable chapters and tutorial videos. The textbook and workbook compliment the online videos perfectly.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer fully supports my apprenticeship. I get half a day study leave each week and time off for my exams. My line managers take an interest in my studies and career development and aways find new opportunities for me to learn new skills.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Kaplan provide a Talent Coach who looks after my wellbeing and ensures I am meeting my apprenticeship requirements. As well as a 6 week contact they meet with my manager every 6 months for a review. Kaplan also have online tutors who provide technical support for the course.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The theoretical knowledge I get from my ACCA course helps me to understand the reasons why we perform certain tasks at work and the benefits to the organisation. I try to align what I am studying with different tasks I perform. It also helps me work better in a team.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We are all encouraged to attend events such as HFMA conferences to learn new techniques and accounting practices.

  • 9a. Would you recommend East Midlands Ambulance Service to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • They take an active interest in the development of their staff and the managers always looking for new opportunities to pass on knowledge or skills to less experienced staff. They fully support learning opportunities and provide financial support towards professional qualifications.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to East Midlands Ambulance Service?
  • Ensure you include any previous relevant work experience when applying for a job. The recruitment process is very straight forward and the induction is very thorough and gives a great insight into the organisation when you start.
