IT Apprentice Review

I'm currently working alongside the site steering department, where i have regular interactions with the team, get involved with daily tasks which include supporting the team with topics of interest, organising content and creating visuals for raw data. I am allocated a mentor who ensures my time with the team is well spent.

Studying towards a Degree in itself has allowed me gain new skills such as coding/software development, report writing and more. In the work environment there is ample opportunity for one to develop new skills through placements, training courses and colleagues who share an expansive knowledge pool and are happy to share when asked. I've had the chance to interact with linux, back end systems and MS products. Through one of my recent placements i've learnt data analytic techniques using BI tools to transform raw data into interactive dashboards to create insights into the business.

I enjoy the apprenticeship and I'm grateful for the opportunity. I particularly enjoy working in different departments and rotating on a regular basis where i can interact with new people, understand what they do and how it affects/supports the bigger picture for the BMW Group.

Structured pretty well. I get a day off to study/work towards the qualification and the other 4 days are spent at work where I engage with and get involved in daily team tasks. As for placements, apprentices rotate every 3-4 months allowing us to get a better understanding of different functions within the business. With regards to organisation of placements, the apprentice team should contact each department where they plan to send an apprentice and create an action plan on what topics will be covered and a set of skills the apprentice is expected to have learnt after a placement there ensuring time is well spent.

I am supported pretty well. My training manager has a great attiude towards supporting me through the apprenitceship and is available for me to approach through different communcation means. She is extremly supportive and i feel i can go to her with any problem i may encounter and trust it will be resolved. We have set times where we meet to discuss progress, concerns and life in general.

Univeristy has been pretty interesting but going into the IT field, it can quickly become mundane and boring. To keep things exciting i think the apprenitce team should look into offering a joint honours degree, not only for the excitement but to make one more well rounded. The tutors at university are available to guide and support when needed. They run through lectures and this is often follwed by a practical session where I can solidify the knowledge presented . The support recieved by the tutors is fairly good and pretty flexible in terms of communication where i can email them at any time of the week. At this moment in time i have no complaints.

Topics covered at University do not directly relate to the tasks i do on a daily basis but i have no doubt, if i choose to stay in IT field they may one day come in handy.

I believe there are but due to the global situation things have come to a halt. I have no doubt these will start again once we have returned to a normal state.

Initially it wasn't what i expected but as time went on, i fell in love :)
