  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role within Openreach is to provide a fibre cable to the premises. This is done by either overhead or underground. Overhead consists of providing a new line or replacing the current copper line from the pole. Underground consists of providing a new line via ducts from manholes to customers premises.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills since starting with Openreach. From climbing poles steps and ladders with a Tetra kit to splicing fibres using a splice machine. I have also learnt how to use Power Point on my laptop, creating a video for my fellow colleagues within my NVQ group.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am really enjoying the work within Openreach. I find it challenging, enjoyable and satisfying especially when a full fibre install has been completed correctly. I can rely on colleagues such as buddies, patch leads and managers to assist me if I need help with jobs or anything associated with my NVQ

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I have found the structure of my programme to be well organised to date. Time was set aside for the introduction to my assessors and further days for the completion on my NVQ. With Covid 19 restrictions our team meetings have been done online from home with the support of assessors.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have a lot of support from my employer through managers, patch leads and colleagues. My NVQ assessors have also made themselves available for support. Colleagues offer support when I am struggling with new topics or guidance's. My manager has made a number of phone call to see how I am getting on and that means a lot.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have 2 assessors assigned to the group 29 I am part of. They have both made it very clear they are there for help and support whether it is by email or a phone call. I get various updates and pointers to certain tasks that need completed before or next team meeting

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I understand that the NVQ qualification i am doing will give me a professional competence for IT and Telecoms Professionals and ICT systems and Principles. This can only give me added knowledge and confidence when it comes to performing on behalf of openreach and when i am relaying information to customers.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • yes I am aware of a fantasy football league that all staff can get involved in. It is a good way to interact with people and management and for those you don't meet very often. Before Covid 19 I was made aware of christmas parties and functions at the ulster rugby as BT are sponsors.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • A secure income and pension for starters. BT has many perks for its employees. Full uniform provided and a van full of tools. BT share schemes is a massive benefit as to is the sick leave if you ever need. Overtime is always available. BT also takes Health and Safety very seriously.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • I would advise everyone and anyone to apply for openreach. The application process sounds daunting but its far from it as I offered little to no experience to the job I applied for. Instructions were well presented on the assessment days. Health and Safety was fully adhered to as many would not have climbed poles using harness and lanyards.
