I am employed as a trainee telecoms engineer. Days can be varied which can include full installs for customers which include fibre cable being provided to a customers home either using the overhead network or feeding it through the underground network. After installations are complete customer handovers are completed and making sure the connection is working as it should.
I have learned how to complete installations at customers houses which include finding safe areas to drill through walls safely by checking for any utilities that may be located inside the walls. My customer service skills have also improved as I have to interact with customers on a daily business. My problem solving skills are also improving as I get to work with experienced engineers on installs that are not straight forward. With their assistance it is improving my problem solving skills by looking at things differently.
I enjoy my new role as no two days are the same and I am always working at a different location and meeting new people. I like the problem solving side to. When there are issues to overcome and I get assisted by more experienced engineers I find these are the best ways to learn.
The class room training was well organised especially with the covid restrictions. Classes were reduced and one way systems introduced into the training location and lots of sanitiser was provided. After the classroom training we had 10 days buddying with an experienced colleague then I was out on my own and at first I thought this was to soon and a little daunting but after a few weeks I feel I am slowly developing into the role but if I get stuck the team i am in are very supportive and someone is always on hand to assist me if needed.
I have found the team I am in is very supportive and someone is always on hand to help me if I need advice or someone to come and take a look at something I am unsure of. As a new member of the team I have found I do need advice in certain areas and this has helped a lot with my continued learning.
I have not had any apprenticeship days yet but I have had several emails from the training provider that provide information about the training I will receive and which dates my training will take place. I have also received emails with information about tasks I can complete to get ahead with my apprenticeship.
On completion of my qualification I will feel that I will be competent at my job and it will help with my continued development in the role and becoming a valuable team member and this should help tasks I complete with more experienced engineers and helping new starters in the role.
With the covid restrictions in place at the moment it is not possible for any social activities to take place with social distancing measures currently in place. I know the manager has said he does organise social meetings with the team a few times a year to get everyone together.

I think openreach is a great company to work for there are some very good perks such as a van and fuel card and a company share scheme. I like the variety to the work to different locations every day and meeting new people. All equipment is also supplied by the company and a staff uniform.
I would definitely say it is worth applying to work at openreach. There are great company perks with van, fuel card and share scheme. I have found my team to be very supportive and there is always someone on the end of the phone who can help if you are stuck.
