I am currently working as a manufacturing engineer for the genset line. This role involves me running my team to be able to respond to day to day call outs and also working pro-actively on improvement projects such as line balances, tooling and ergonomics. This allows us to continually improve the line to ensure we are reducing cycle times and increasing throughput safely.
I have learnt many new skills in this role such as people management, communication to all levels of employees, project management and technical applications. This has allowed me to build up a sound manufacturing team that can react to the issues being faced day to day in an efficient manner to reduce down time.
The level 6 programme has allowed me to complete a degree along side my job role. This was a great way to do it as i had real life examples to reflect my learning and how i can apply these to the company. From the degree i have now been enrolled on to an NVQ Lvl 4 which will further enhance my learnings.
The programme is very well structured. From year 1 you are at college full time spending term breaks in plant. Year 2 you rotate the shop ops placements to gain a raw understanding of the product. Year 3 you spend time in the technical departments working in Man eng and quality and Year 4 you spend time in your final placement. Years 5 - 7 you work in your final placements whilst completing the degree and NVQ lvl 4.
The support you receive from your employer is really good. my manager has acted as a mentor and is really supportive of any studies that are happening alongside your day to day job role. HR allow time for 10 weekly reviews which allows progress to be checked and SMART targets to be developed.
I have 10 weekly reviews which allow progress to be discussed. when carrying out qualification the tutor sets up tutorials to allow for extra time for any concerns or struggles that need addressing. The attitude is brilliant as they want you to succeed. Even though a degree was daunting I really enjoyed the qualification and got a lot out of it
The learning i have carried out during my apprenticeship has allowed me to apply my theory practically. This has made me think deeper into the improvements made and allowed for me to come up with more permanent long term results. I know alot more about the job role from the theory work i have completed
there are alot of activities to do outside of work whether that be joining the sports and social club which arranges day excursions for employees and their family and friends. We also have many social outings within the teams including meals, Christmas party and go karting during the summer months
Yes
It is a great company to work for which allows you to progress. There is no ceiling, you can go as far as you want to, your future is up to you! the support provided is second to none which gives you the confidence to keep challenging the impossible each day
Be honest through every step of your application. The skills you do not have now can be developed through the scheme which will allow us to measure successes. Show enthusiasm and passion for wanting to learn more and step out of your comfort zone to drive the change for the better
