Trainee biomedical scientist in a medical microbiology laboratory involves identification of the pathogenic causes of infection and antimicrobial susceptibility testing to aid in diagnosis and treatment
I have learned many new skills in the medical laboratory and lots of new knowledge in the scientific principles which underpin the analysis we do, and the pathophysiology of disease in microbiology and other laboratory disciplines.
I thoroughly enjoy the programme. It has been a challenge to keep up with work and academic responsibilities at times, particularly in the Covid-19 pandemic, however the course content and work-based learning have been very interesting and engaging.
The programme could be structured better as it has seemed a little disorganised at times, however I expect a lot of this will largely be due to the fact that I began the course in the first year it became available - I expect that as subsequent years progress and more people are involved in this degree apprenticeship the process will be smoother.
I receive a great deal of support from my employer. My line manager has been heavily involved in my training and progression and has overseen my final year project and thesis.
Sheffield Hallam University have been heavily involved in training and supervision of work based learning. Many of the issues which have arisen have been dealt with by Sheffield Hallam and they have offered assistance throughout the course.
I feel my qualification has enhanced my capabilities to perform my work greatly, as I now have the knowledge to work as a biomedical scientist and have progressed in my career from my previous role as a laboratory assistant.
There are many team building activities which take place outside of working hours, and many of my colleagues are involved with these. On completion of academic responsibilities I hope to have more free time and to be more involved with these.
Yes
It is a great place to work where I have built some really strong professional relationships and friendships.
Keep trying with applications and research the job you are applying to, particularly the person specification, so that you can match your skills to what the employer is seeking.
