  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I will work on a substation and my role is to be a substation craftsperson. Being a substation craftsperson means I will be looking after the assets on a substation. For example one of the tasks I may be assigned to could be maintenance on an asset such as a transformer or circuit breaker.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Coming from a previous education in engineering I'm familiar with some of the teachings, however, I have learnt some new skills. One skill I have learnt about is different drawings of parts, such as first and third view, isometric and orthographic. I have been learning how to read and sketch these diagrams. Other skills I have learnt along the way have been improving my social skills, maths and English.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme because it allows me to do something I enjoy. Although some parts may be challenging I still enjoy the programme. This course allows me to be hands on, which is something I enjoy. By the end of my apprenticeship I will have learnt many new skills which i will be able to put to use and be hands on with my work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I would say that my programme is well-structured. This is because a timetable has been provided with all the information needed for training locations and the topic. As well as a website with a frequently asked questions page which is very useful. If there was a problem to arise affecting the timetable for example then changes will be made promptly to keep us on track with our learning.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer gives me a lot of support when needed. I have been given lots of contacts such as who to contact for wellbeing, and if I have any questions I can search for them on a shared document where previous people may have asked the same question. In addition I have been assigned a mentor and have been given a buddy, who has already done what I am currently doing.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • When working on the units of the qualification the trainers provide us with structured lessons. We start each new topic learning around the subject and we are able to ask for support when needed and it is provided. We are given enough support to be competent in the subject area and take the exams with confidence.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that I benefit from the qualification as it is teaching me and preparing me to be competent in my role. It will make me feel confident in my performance as I will be able to further understand how to operate in my role as a substation craftsperson. As this qualification is providing me with the information and knowledge needed.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes. When I have finished working or learning for the day I am able to use the onsite gym. This can be used from the morning to late evening. There is also the common room to relax and have fun. There is normally a TV playing football games and there is a games room with a pool table. There is also a function room with TVs where you can bring your games console and plug in and play.

  • 9a. Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • National Grid look after there employees and keep everyone safe, which is one of their biggest values. They provide lots of support and information when you need help. They are also looking for new ways to create a future with a greener environment by setting goals like reducing emissions such as greenhouse gases.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • I would advise researching about and around National Grid and your role you are applying for. This is because they might want to know how much you about what you are applying for. As the description of the role may be different from what you assumed from the job title, therefore you might not like the job you are applying for as it is not what you thought.
