It depends on the department your working in; carry out projects for that department which could include designing something on CAD or helping rig an engine for test.

Because if your interested in engineering there's so many different departments that you have the opportunity to get stuck into
Stick out the first year (which is mainly at college) and the whole experience gets much better as you have a lot more to get involved in.
