I am Risk Apprentices and I have to put together reports, analysis and speak with people about the type of risk and severity of that risk and come up with controls to mitigate these.
Yes. I have learnt to network, speak with people from different countries/ cultures/ backgrounds, put together power point reports and decks, use complicated excel formulas, how to speak with senior management, manage expectations, provide constructive feedback, team working and much more.
I enjoy the program because its flexible, relevant as my work is actually used in board reports/ to make decisions, and the teams i work with are super friendly and a joy to work with.
I would say its suffice however there are some aspects I would improve. For example, within the program you rotate within 3 risk areas however at the moment you are unable to choose causing uncertainty when it comes to the end of your current rotation however this does add an aspect of excitement.
I get 1 day a week for off the job training (study leave) which helps massively prepare my portfolio and complete work for my exams. also there are skill sessions which support me in my development. My teams have also massively supported me.
I receive a sufficient amount of support however it could be improved. For example we have catch ups with them every 6 weeks however these don't seem frequent enough and its not always clear what they want us to get done after these calls. Also, I have experienced many manger/ talent coach changes from the training provider which also causes delays and decreases support as each time i have to build a new repour with the new contact and explain my progress again and I often have to change the way I submit work as they prefer to do things differently than there predecessor
it helps me understand the wider structure of the industry and best practices which then i can use in my specific risk day to day role.
Yes there are plenty of work streams and events happening. I'm a member of a Friday football forum and I aim to join a coupe sports teams when back in office.
Yes
The level of exposure you receive is incredible but at the same time you have the support there to help you cope with that exposure. Also the people within Barclays are awesome!
Defiantly think about your interests so you can apply for roles that apply to you. for example if you are interested in climate change then think about how you can apply to the climate risk team but if you enjoy understanding markets/ trading it may be worth researching risk types in that area. Research before hand is a must, manager like it if you under the core risks, why they are present and how the bank already mitigate against these.
