  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Every day is different, the basic overview is installing new lines and finding and fixing faults in the network. You get to keep your van at home so you can leave straight from there to your first job there’s no one watching over your shoulder but always support if it’s needed

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • All skills are taught on the job so it doesn’t matter what background you come from. From climbing poles and ladders to put up dropwires or how to use all the equipment or drilling into houses/ walls. Even after training is all complete there is buddy time where someone helps you out in the field till you get the hang of it

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy the program, it is a lot to learn at once and very full on but slowly it all slots into place and clicks as to when you will need and use the information. Being able to learn in small groups helps the enjoyment but not make it too rowdy to get stuff done

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The organisation side of thing is alright but not the greatest. As I need to travel and stay away from home for my training there’s been instances where they’ve changed schedules about. When I’ve been not at training the managers don’t communicate with each other so they don’t know when I’m home and don’t give me work. On the structural side of things of the program it’s quite good the teach the subjects in an order which would be how things are done in life

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Well depends on who you are talking about, as when first joining you get a training manager who you will meet on your first day and never hear from again. But all local leads and managers and even employees are beyond amazing and will help others out no matter what else

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I can’t quite say so far as I’m still training and haven’t started that part of the apprenticeship yet. But the support from trainers during training sessions is normally pretty good always happy to talk through anything over and over again until you get or as many demonstrations as needed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Yes definitely there are so many little quizzes and demonstrations you need to pass before even being allowed out in the field. Because of these they make you work hard to know what your doing. As well as the amount of booklets upon booklets given that you keep in your van to be referred back to when our on your own.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Especially with COVID going on not that I’ve heard about. I’ve heard that before the pandemic there was always stuff going on and good Christmas parties too but I guess only time will tell. There is often people live on workplace video chatting and giving demonstrations on random activities that are non work related to try and get people involved

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There is so much training provided that you never feel like you don’t know what your doing. All equipment and a van is provided and keeping the van at home is an added bonus. You can assign any online training you want to complete yourself so if you want a bit of extra training it’s always there. The benefits are decent too!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • Just be yourself, don’t try lie. You don’t need anything except a drivers licence as everything is provided. You do have to be a hard worker and willing to get your hands dirty to enjoy a job like this. Once you have started it’s a brilliant job
