Day-to-day in my role I help support teachers and students with various IT issues they may come across. This is over a multitude of platforms including; iPads, PC's, Macs or mobile phones. I am responsible for helping manage the helpdesk and responding to tickets that may come in regularly.
I have learnt a multitude of new skills, these included but are not limited to; problem solving techniques, setting up and configuring iPads and Windows PC's(through SCCM), learning about MIS systems, critically thinking. I have developed my people skills, customer service skills and being able to work part of a group or by myself.
I really enjoy the programme, it is the perfect mix of self driven work, which gives a better sense of responsibility and flexibility and lecturer led courses which provides you with great knowledge of industry standards. Lecturer led courses also gives you the chance to talk with some leading professionals in the field.
The programme is organised adequately, there can be big gaps between courses and if you finish work it can be a long time before you get the chance to get more work. It does allow for rest periods between courses and helps manage your workload in the office which is good.
I have received a lot of support from my manager and colleagues with regards to the programme, working beside people who have been in the industry for a long time also helps, being able to ask them questions about issues and what the best path forward is. My manager also provides me with other platforms to learn.
The support from QA is really good, I was able to have regular conversations with my assessor and account manager. They were easy to get in contact with and had a great attitude towards supporting me, they made it known that they were always there whenever I needed them. They gave me a lot of support and multitude paths to get support.
The training and qualification provided through QA and SDS has helped me integrate into my role a lot easier than it would have been just learning on the job, it has been useful as the theory has helped me look at my job from a different point of view. Going on courses has helped me develop my knowledge of the IT industry and gave me experience that helps in my role.
Since I work at a school there is tonnes of different extra-curricular opportunities that I can get involved with such as different sports, games or clubs. There is a lot of social activities up coming with regards to people leaving the school and when the school year ends, it is a very close knit community.
Yes
The Edinburgh Academy is a well renowned private school in Edinburgh, the staff are very friendly and there is a wide range of opportunities both professional and personal, it is a history rich school and there is a pride in working here. It is a well known name and is caring to it's staff, plus there is free lunch.
For applying to a support role at the Edinburgh Academy, the biggest tip I can give is show you are eager to help make the school run smoothly, you are there to support teachers and pupils. The interview process is very well run, my manager was very clear what was expected of me in my role and what I would be doing.
