My current job role involves installing or decommissioning hardware such as servers, switches, firewalls and routers, laying cables (mainly Cat6 and OM4 Fibre) to connect to different ports and outlets within the data hall and checking and troubleshooting different pieces of customer equipment that we have installed within the data halls.
Everything that is required to do my job I had no prior knowledge on beforehand. It is mostly manual work and so I have learned many new skills in installations of different pieces of equipment and many different cabling skills. I have also developed on my existing Microsoft Office skills especially in Excel.
I've enjoyed my time working at Atos a lot more than I've enjoyed completing any QA apprenticeship work.
The apprenticeship program itself was very well structured and I was given a clear timeline/pathway of apprenticeship completion. Covid somewhat hindered this but the pandemic was still dealt with well in order to successfully complete the programme.
I received plenty of support from my employer and was allowed to take as much time as I needed in order to complete any work for my apprenticeship. There was also people in my team who had previously completed the same or similar apprenticeships who offered a lot of help.
I was assigned a skill's coach employed by my training provider who offered unlimited help and support when needed. There was also other options available to me should I have needed any further support.
My job role is very limited currently with what I do. Some of the courses boosted my knowledge in areas of my job role but many were aimed at other job roles. However, the qualification and skills learned may be very useful for future development into other roles.
There are loads especially in non-covid times but I would normally choose not to attend.
Yes
There can be decent career opportunities at times, and working in my team especially is quite fun.
If you are starting at the bottom don't get too settled and have a career path in mind.
