Working as a case manager in business banking consisted of looking after a portfolio of lending cases making sure that any processes were carried out within the bank's control measures. This role gave me opportunities to work with a variety of colleagues from different business areas
The formal qualification I have earned has taught me about process improvement and the tools used to support that i.e. Lean, Six sigma. In addition to this I have learned many other soft skills such as stakeholder-management. I also feel like I have a good understanding of the industry
I enjoyed the course materials and felt that my day-to-day role was interesting. The people in my team and everyone I came across in Barclays were all very friendly. There were certain aspects of the programme/ job role where it was hard to get advice about what was required.
The overall apprenticeship is broken into three clear aspects which was explained quite well on my first day. It does feel like the apprenticeship team don't communicate that well with your respective team, so you have to be on top of things yourself
Management has always been supportive and we are constantly looking at ways I can develop myself while at Barclays. Although I wasn't assigned a mentor initially there were plenty of people I could look to for help on my team. As long as you're willing to chase things then Barclays is a supportive company
Capella organised regular training sessions which on the most part felt interactive. We had regular 1-1 catch ups with our tutor who gave us tailored advice on our coursework. Capella also made sure that Barclays was giving us enough time to focus on our apprenticeship qualification
I have a more analytical way of looking at things now and can apply practical and methodical problem solving to issues that I come across in my normal job role. Although I don't use what I learnt everyday, I am more aware of what to do when the opportunity arises i.e. working on specific projects, assisting other teams
During COVID-19 Barclays have been offering plenty of online workshops on both work and non-work related topics. Before covid there were also a few workshops held in the office. Sociability depends on the team you're in. Barclays actively encourages you to volunteer and you can take 2 days extra leave to volunteer somewhere
Yes
If you're interested in working in banking/finance then the qualifications and experience you can earn are extremely beneficial.
Use STAR (Situation-Task-Action-Result) method when talking about past experience in the interview. Don't be nervous- everyone else is just an employee like you, they're not there to catch you out. Past experience in banking/finance is good but not essential- try think of times where you've had to use: customer service, problem solving, leadership, teamwork
