Fibre Jointer Review

As a Fibre Jointer (Telecomms Engineer), my role varies from day-to-day. One day, I could be providing a fibre dropwire to a customer's property, the next I could be building a joint by stripping cables and splicing. In a summary of what I do is building the fibre network.

I have entered a role in which I had no previous experience so I have learnt so much in the small time that I have been working in Openreach. Learning all the basics of the trade but also learning how to climb poles was something that was different and interesting.

Prior to joining the programme I didn't know what to expect having been to college and in the military I had exceptional training but I haven't enjoyed any training programme like I have with this one with Openreach. Trainers who care make it easier and better to learn.

Coming off what I said from question three, I had no idea what to expect from joining Openreach but I was pleasantly surprised of how well structured the programme is and how well put together it is to maximise learning for the students without pushing too much information on us.

From my very first day back in February 2021, I have recieved all the help I can get despite moving from Yarnfield to different training facilities to my team I work with on a day-to-day basis. If I have any concerns or issues learning something, I know who I can talk to.

Unlike previous training programmes from different companies, with Openreach, I feel the support and know where to find it when working towards my qualifications. They are only an email or call away which is reassuring when inevitably I'll need to ask a few questions or any coursework requiring completion.

The great part about this apprenticeship is that it accommodates all types of learners. I'm a practical and hands-on learner but it's good to see visual representation of what is required in my day-to-day role so that I can enhance my learning and become a well rounded engineer.

At the moment, with the country just easing on covid restrictions, there isn't any extra-curricular activities to get involved in at work. However, I don't think that it will be too long until there is social activities to be included in or advertised. I know that team meetings will happen soon.

A company that not only looks after their employees but rewards them for working hard can sometimes be hard to come by nowadays. I have had a wide variety of jobs working for various different companies but I've never had such a good time in my work and imagine myself working for this company for the rest of my life.

My advice for people applying for Openreach is committing to this company with hard work and dedication you'll reap the rewards down the line. Not only with an apprenticeship (if not previously experienced) does it give you a career but you have a great team around you giving you plenty of guidance and support.
