working as a design consultant in wickes means that I will be designing bathrooms and kitchens for clients, which can include flooring and tiling projcts also. I go out on home measures and also do the plans for the projects t o showcase to the customer for them to decide if they would like to go ahead with the project. It is also my job to help the customer have their dream kitchen or bathroom which works with their budget. I also have admin work which needs to be done daily to make sure that everything is up to date and to also make sure that everything is processed properly.
I have learnt so many skills since starting Wickes and will carry on dong so through the time I work for the company. The biggest way I have learnt through the company is the design consultant apprenticeship I am on currently as it is showing me all the different avenues we have to consider for the job role and also teaching me how to complete the job on a daily basis getting my skills and knowledge to be able to be a brilliant design consultant. I have also developed a better understanding of sales and how to and what not to do in terms of approaching and speaking to customers. I also learn a lot from my colleagues as they offer support where needed but they encourage me to be the best version of me.
I really enjoy the apprenticeship program I am on as it allows me to understand the job role in more depth and I have learnt so many new skills along the way. Sometimes it is challenging to keep up with the work load as well as doing the job at the same time however that inst down to the programme its my time management. I have also met some amazing people along the way which have helped massively throughout the programme.
the programme is structured very well and the work which is given to us as a group is informative and easy to follow. The webinars we have a re booked in advance which allows us to know when something is coming up. the different topics we cover throughout the programme I believe are also planned out very well as it all works from the previous modules allowing us to understand the next module in a little more detail than the layout of the modules being very random.
I recieve a fair bit of support but mainly from the apprenticeship coach and group. My employer (managment) has changed throughout my programme so they all have had to catch up and some havent been as interested as others have been. In other aspects the management are helpful when it comes down to the job role and other important needs throughout the company. The support is there when I need it but sometimes i do find that we have to go to management they dont always come to us and ask how we are.
I receive a lot of support from my apprenticeship coach. She is so easy to speak to and helps out as much as she possibly can. If I dont understand something straight away it gets broken down for me and any questions we have as a group they are answered. Everything to do with the course I just feel like the support from my coach is always there and also with my job role she helps me see what I should be allowing and what I shouldn't be
My training has given me such a better insight into the job role as i am looking at some many different paths and areas which i wouldn't have usually considered if I dint have this course. it helps me understand what to look for when speaking to a customer and also what I can do to help the customer achieve their dreams. Also from doing the apprenticeship i feel like i have learnt more about a design consultant that i would have done if i had trained up in a different way as it goes into a lot of detail.
There are always extra work which can be done to push your knowledge further, like attending company calls, arranging webinar calls with brand represrntvies and also with the course the group we help each other and challenege each other as much as possible. I also tend to push myself to try and do a little more than needed to make myself understand things in more detail, for example going on numerous home measures to get a better understanding
Yes
Because the company has a lot of things to offer if you want to do well within your career. It is also a good company to gain knowledge in so many difffernt areas such as DIY, designing, sales, management etc. It can also be used as a stepping stone for peoples careers, however I believe the staff's jobs roles want them to do more than they say.
I would be mindful that the hours within Wickes change especially on the shop floor and that there is a lot of work to be done which you wouldn't expect, however it is a good company to work for as you learn so many new skills. The company is very good to work for especially in terms of the showroom/design side as they push you more into progression
