My role in openreach as a telecoms engineer involves a wide and varied ammount of task. No two days are the same, one job could be installing a new line into a property, and giving the customer a working phone line and then you could move onto fixing a customers broadband.
Yes i have learnt and developed a vast and varied ammount of new skills, some of the new skills included, learning how to safely install a new phone line, safely drill holes into customers property's, fit new sockets, and connect this line to the openreach network to provide a reliable working servise.
I really enjoy my role as an openreach engineer as no 2 days or jobs are the same, every task is different, I find that due to this that you are constantly thinking of the best way to complete the task safely and to the satification of the customer. Everyday you seem to learn something new and different.
I found the training programme extremely well organised. The training in my first week at Yarnfield and the next few months at Bolton was really well put together. My buddying when I was on my patch was brilliant, my buddy was patient, knowledgeable and explained things in a way that made sense, My NVQ trainer was also excellent, I don't have a lot of experience working with computers and I explained this to and the support and advise he give me was 2nd to none. I owe these 2 men a lot, the way they have helped me get to where I am today.
The support I receive from my employer was really good while I was doing my training, I feel I still get supported but at times I feel I could do with a little more help, but I understand we have been very busy during the pandemic, with engineers off and the amount of work there has been outstanding.
As i said earlier the support from my training provider has been very good, the support from [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] was excellent, without the support and understanding from I believe I would have struggled to complete my NVQ in the year we are expected to do so. He was always available to offer advise and support.
I'm not sure if my qualification, helps me perform better as an engineer, but it provided a grounding in what is expected as an engineer, the correct way to do the tasks we are allocated, but more importantly, the safe way to approach the task, carry out a risk assessment and safely complete the task.
Yes there are extra - curricular activities to get involved with, we as a patch team now have regular huddles, now we are allowed now covid restrictions have been eased, we did and hopefully will again go out for nights out again soon. We also have a fantasy football league that we meet up for every month. This is the 1st job where i feel like i'm a member of a work team
Yes
I would and have recommended Openreach to friends, I also had customers ask what Openreach is like to work for, I have told them how happy i am working for them, the training and support you receive, the help you get from your instructors and trainers but the help you get from your fellow engineers.
I found the process of applying to work at Openreach relatively straight forward, everyone was friendly and helpful and put me at ease. Be yourself, show Openreach how important customer relations are and how important working safely is. And try and demonstrate that you would be an asset to Openreach and the team you would be working with.
