The work experience program took place virtually, over four days. It involved interactive talks from many members of the company, including discussion sessions with supervisors. We also took part in group activities, such as debates, and discussions. We were assigned individual tasks which involved reading a lease, applying the law to a clients' situation, etc.
On this work experience program I have learned a lot about what the role of a solicitor is, and what this job involves. Specifically, I have learned how to apply the law to clients' situations, how to read a lease and provide suggested amendments for a client, how to put together a CV, and much more.
I really enjoyed the work experience program, as it provided a lot of information and insight into the realities of working at the company. It was also very interactive which allowed me to try things for myself, ask questions, and get involved in group work and discussions. I found the tasks much more enjoyable than I would have expected!
The work experience was extremely well organised, I felt that the platform used made it very easy to know when the events were happening, and they were very easy to access. Similarly, it was easy to find any tasks we were asked to do, and the resources were clearly and simply accessible.
I felt that I learned a lot about the company culture and what it would be like to work at Pinsent Masons, particularly through the introduction to the Belfast office on the Monday afternoon, and speaking to our supervisors. I also appreciated how clear they were in expressing their values, and the things they are doing in the wider community. However, it would be impossible to learn as much in this category over zoom, as would be possible in person.
The work experience has been very helpful to me in helping me decide on my future career path. It showed me a real insight into the work of a solicitor, and also allowed me to learn of various specialisations and roles which may be of interest to me. It was also helpful in terms of information about applications.
No, I was not paid for this experience. This is because the experience was designed for the purpose of benefitting me and the other work experience participants, rather than the firm. Therefore, the experience was an opportunity I am extremely grateful to, rather than something i would expect to be paid for. I had no associated expenses.
Yes, there were opportunities for networking. We were given time to speak to people working in the Belfast office in a smaller group setting, as well as being introduced to many people throughout the course of the program on larger meetings. There was also the opportunity to attend a networking event during the final lunch time.
Yes
I found the experience to be extremely engaging, given the variety of tasks, events, group discussion, and talks. It allowed me a real insight into the work of the firm and its culture. Everyone involved was extremely helpful and welcoming, meaning that it was a positive and enjoyable experience, as well as helpful for my future career.
In applying for the work experience, I would advise that people start well in advance, giving themselves time to work on their answers and make sure that the application is the best representation of themselves that they can give. I also learned in this experience about the importance of commercial awareness, particularly when applying for graduate roles.
