  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am learning the skills and techniques that will be required of me to excel as a mechanical engineer within the company, Babcock. Our first year is highly focused on learning the basic skills and learning the types of tools and machines we will be using. We are also learning to write comprehensive reports and the level of work that is expected of us.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills within the working space. We have focused on hand skills which includes learning how to use files, hammers, mallets, pillar drills, electrical equipment, hand held tools and many more. We have also spent time learning about components and parts that make up the pumps, compressors and engines we will be dismantling.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am really enjoying the programme so far and am excited to learn and develop more skills over the coming years. I have met many new friends among my colleagues and am enjoying the learning curriculum and style we are being taught at City College Plymouth. Our managers from within Babcock are very proactive with our learning too.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured and is very easy to follow. We are learning lots of new skills and being taught all we need to know to succeed in the mechanical engineering field. Our lecturers, tutors and our managers within the company Babcock are also very supportive and take an active interest in our learning.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Our managers within the company Babcock take an active interest in our learning and are regularly visiting our group within City College building to review how well we are doing. With regular checks and progress tests from our college lecturers they are able to gauge our progress and check that we are enjoying the course or if we need any support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Our employer, Babcock, give us regular reviews and check ups to follow our progress and ensure we are enjoying our course. It is also to check whether we need any support with our training. This will continue throughout the next 4 years as well as receiving in person training from our managers starting in our second year.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that the training helps me to perform better in my role by providing me with the skills and knowledge I need to succeed in the mechanical engineering field. The training provided by both Babcock and City College Plymouth is comprehensive and detailed and has taught me many skills in a short span of time.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The training provider, City College Plymouth, have many extra curricular activities that are available to us as apprentices, such as trips, student events, workshops, talks etc. There are also apprentice specific events similar that are provided to us to help us through our journey. Babcock also provide access to different on site societies and activities.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Babcock to a friend as it has taken me a long time to find a place where I believe I can make a career out of it. The application process was simple and easy to follow and communication with the company continues to be top rated. My family also work for the company and love their respective positions.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock?
  • My advice to others applying for an apprenticeship at Babcock would be to ensure you follow all the processes that are emailed to you and be open to ask any questions necessary to succeed in your journey. Also, to try your hardest on the video applications in order to be seen and to help your success.
