My role in the dockyard as an apprentice, is to help the fitters with their jobs and at the same time learn and develop new skills that I need to become a electrical fitter
I have learnt many news skills whilst being at this apprenticeship, I have learnt too many to put them all here so I’ll name a few ; wiring in a socket, banding, panduiting, proving dead, earthing bonds, packing glands, packing rackbergs, etc.
I enjoy my job a lot at the moment but I know soon I’ll be forced to move placement into a new environment with new people, this makes the bonds and friendships that you make over the 6 month period completely wasted
The company can be very organised and also very clumsy, for example they are able to set up everyone’s covid test and placements but are unable to manage the course work coming through as not all ADMs are present. This overloads one ADM and makes his job extremely hard.
The support you receive is great from Babcock, they have many measures in place that mean you can be supported by union reps. They also offer health care through the ohc.
You get supported well in collage
It helps a lot
