My role as an apprentice in Solutions Design, more specifically the transport team, includes training day to day on the various software and programs for me to be able to implement these skills in future projects planning transport solutions. Also working on my SME topic for this year which is developing a sharepoint page for the transport solutions design team.
Since starting my apprenticeship I have widened my knowledge using Microsoft Excel, as well as developed new skills in programs such as Power BI and Outlook. As well as these skills I have also gained more confidence in myself, work and when talking to new people. Also my degree at Aston University has helped me develop writing and learning skills.
Every day I wake up excited to go to the office or start working. The job has exceeded my expectations because of the team I work within, the vast amount of support I receive and the company as a whole. The work to university balance is set out well so I have enough time to write assignments to the best of my ability.
The programme as a whole is set out very well to balance the workload from both DHL and Aston University. I have regular meetings with my line manager to discuss progress and development. Aswell as this I have direct access to everyone within my team who offer support regularly when needed.
I am in contact with my line manager daily in the office or when working from home to talk regarding development, progress and daily tasks. Many people in the team also offer help with more technical problems on software and are more than happy to help. Also the emerging talent team always reach out to offer support.
Aston University offer lots of support in regards to my degree. Calls with my mentor and line manager are set up to discuss progress and plans moving forward. The weekly lectures help us understand the content of the course and they are always open to questions throughout and at the end of sessions.
The degree in supply chain management helps me better understand my role as a supply chain leader apprentice form another aspect. Coming from a background with no experience in logistics, the degree gives me a general oversight to the supply chain sector as a whole and my role is a more specific based curriculum.
Working from home makes it harder for the team to meet up, however calls have been set up for a couple times per week to have a virtual coffee and catch up with workmates. Having started in Covid times, no social events have been organised, however they are in talks for the near future.
Yes
It is such a diverse company to work for and in my own experience I was welcomed into the team instantly, considering I have no previous experience. The course is set up well and my skills develop every day. Also the benefits I can receive through work are unmatched to any other company I have seen.
When applying to DHL, I would recommend being your complete self. Also prepare well for the interviews and assessment days so you have ideas on what to say already to ease the process with nerves added. If I were to do it again I would like to be told that it doesnt matter on previous experience or lack of, as everything you need to know will be taught.
