Maintenance and repair of plant, lorries and equipment for kiers surface dressing fleet. During the winter months a full strip down and overhaul is performed on the spray equipment, along with MOT prep for the lorries, during the surface dressing season we operate as mobile fitters attending breakdowns and callouts across the country.
My fabrication works have improved greatly, i could weld before but have really developed and improved on what i already can do. Electrical diagnostics has been a new skill that i have picked up and want to continue to get better at. I am currently undergoing my Class 1 HGV training.
I love what i do, I've always been interested in mechanics and vehicles and fixing them. I mechanic for a motorsport team on the odd weekend and have a couple of car projects on the go too so to be able to go to work every day and enjoy what you do is a blessing.
Its good, it wasn't easy during the initial covid wave, and Suffolk new college was in transition from being Otley college, which affected their ability hugely to provide support for its students, to point where it was non existent and i had to personally enquire with as they just didn't keep in contact, Kier however were brilliant and reassured and supported me throughout.
I feel i get all the support i need, with various training programmes etc. Sometimes it takes a while for any requests to get finalised and carried out, you do have to keep chasing them, but ultimately I've always had the support and reassurance i need to develop my skills to become a valuable asset to the team.
Currently, the support is fantastic, we have a great assessor who regularly visits our workplace to make sure we're happy and on track with our learning, our college tutor is great and his teaching style is really engaging. The first 2 years do feel a little wasted however due to the transition and covid to which the college didnt handle very well at all. But currently everything is great.
It just gives me the correct skills and mental knowledge that when presented with a problem, i know where to start looking and the correct procedures to follow and tools to use to successfully repair and maintain our fleet. There are some aspects at work which aren't covered by my college course, but i have received in house training for the spraying systems and am more than competent when maintaining them.
There are often activities that are put on by Kier, one in particular was an apprentice meet and greet where apprentices got to meet each other for team building exercises, i did not attend however as unfortunately the location was too far afield, so i do feel there could be more that are arranged locally within our area/sector.
Yes
I have enjoyed my time here so far, i feel welcome, treated with respect which can be a bit of an anomaly when you're an apprentice and the people i get on great with the people i work with. The additional training kier offers is a big attraction too, they really do allow you to develop and grow within the business.
Learn about the history of kier, certain questions may come up in the interview. Take all the opportunities they offer you, but also don't be afraid to ask, If you think you could benefit from a certain piece of training and it will help you in your work then ask!
