I’m currently studying for a hnc, doing engineering maths, engineering materials, engineering science and CAD so have been in classrooms two times a week doing assignments and working towards exams. I’ve also been getting experience in a workshop to improve ksb and hand skills.
I’ve learnt lots of new hand skills such as welding, thermal cutting and grinding. Also learnt a lot of new information in the subjects I’ve been doing.
I enjoy the variety of things we do and learn about and I enjoy spending time with the new people I met.
Other groups feel more structured than ours such as the fabrication and welding groups, whereas our higher group feels as if there’s not enough communication between our colleges and employer therefore lacking a little in structure.
I haven’t needed any but I know that if I ever have an issue I could always go to my employer to get an answer or to get general help.
I constantly get help from college whether it’s helping me with hand skills or helping me get started with an assignment.
The lessons I have will help me with my role later on and the hand skills will help me understand other people’s roles.
In our first year we’re just at college so you can get involved with stuff there but we can’t do anything in the dockyard yet, we will be able to next year.
Yes
It’s a good apprenticeship with good pay and it’s a great step into an engineering career.
Do it as soon as possible so that you have your foot in the door and can then move to other sections that you like, therefore you can be in a really good job at a young age.
