My role varies from day to day, some days I will be sending out tenders, reviewing information including drawings, designs and contract conditions; other days I’ll spend time on excel reporting the financial health of the project, negotiating with subcontractors, communicating and reporting into our client and their team and some days I’ll spend all day out on site reviewing, monitoring and measuring the completed work
Studying and Working is a challenge but one which is very rewarding, There is a lot of pressure for the Quantity Surveyor to know about every detail about what is going on, which means having to being organised in everything that you do. This can be a struggle when managing subcontractors, client teams, professional relationships, as well as the all of the university work! However, the challenges are a part of what makes the job so exciting!
Starting a degree apprenticeship can be daunting and hard work, however it is also so rewarding and provides you with a real sense of achievement. Being able to demonstrate your on the job learning in a classroom setting shows just how much you have learnt through carrying out your role and being able to apply and use real world experiences in your work helps to put many challenges into context.
Very well structured with support from the business unit, managers, directors, central support teams and Sheffield Hallam University staff.
Studying and Working is a challenge but one which is very rewarding, I am fully supported by my business unit and teams which I work in, with everyone hugely supportive of the Degree Apprenticeship programme within Kier, with many Directors & Managers progressing through previous schemes themselves.
Sheffield Hallam support apprentices through giving advice and relating to the student. Advisors are available via email, calls or in person giving a range of support.

Kier have multiple events carried out throughout the year, all at different levels whether done at project level, office level, business unit or centrally organised through the learning and development team.
Yes
Kier is great place to work, with managers rewarding exceptional work through progression opportunities.
My advice to anyone starting a degree apprenticeship would be to take the opportunity and push yourself to prove just how much you can achieve, whilst also setting yourself up for an amazing career and loving the industry you work in.
