On a day to day basis my job role would consist of quantification and costing of construction works, cost planning, cost reporting, change control and management and valuations. I would also be required to attend client and design team meetings and produce documents in line with our internal systems and quality assurance procedures.
I have definitely learnt new skills during my time with Mace. Firstly I have been able to work on my technical skills including using cost reporting and cost planning systems as well as using computer based measurement tools. I have also been able to develop personal skills like how to deal with clients.
I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship programme with Mace. It has allowed me to study towards a degree without the debt but also provide me with valuable work experience in my field of choice which you would not be able to get at university. It also allows you to create a good network with others on the scheme and gives you good training.
The programme is very organised. We have a set day each year that we are to attend university in order to gain our off the job training. We are also sent a training schedule at the beginning of each year for all the sessions that we are going to be attending internally.
My employer are always very supportive. They are always asking for feedback on the scheme and looking for elements they can improve. They have set up sessions to aid in my APC journey, there are people available and willing to help with university work and there is also additional training provided.
Firstly our topics that we study are in line with the competencies that are required to pass your APC. There are regular progress meetings where these competencies are checked and they ensure you are logging your off the job hours. There is also sessions on how to begin the APC journey as part of your end point assessment.
For the most part I think that it does help with my performance in my role. However at times during the course I feel that some elements have not particularly been relevant or they feel outdated or behind what I am currently doing as part of my role. However they do align with the RICS competencies.
Mace provide several extra curricular activities to get involved in. For starters, there are regular internal and external networking events. These can be with project teams or internal teams in Mace. There are also other groups to get involved that have social activities and opportunities to try new things and meet new people
Yes
Because it is a great company to work for and is one of the market leaders in their field. They offer a great opportunity to work on a variety of projects in different sectors and locations and also have a structured training scheme that sets you up great to gain your relevant qualifications.
To make sure they do some research on the companies website and some of Mace's recent major projects. It is good to show knowledge and interest for the company that you are applying for. Also take a look at the purpose hub and try to align answers with some of the Mace 2026 Business Plan.
