Repair and monitoring of high voltage switchgear on the electricity network. Mostly planned maintenance of assets as per maintenance requirements. Travel between different sites in my area carrying out work with a team of staff.
C&G qualification is under way and lots of practical work has been carried out in our training facility, learning basic tool practices to carrying out mock maintenance's as per real life.
I enjoy it highly as it is a great opportunity for a young person, probably the best you will find in the country. The mix of people is broad and the benefits of expenses, shares and pension is above any other employer I have seen.
I feel valued as we are the future of the company, lots of time an money is being invested in us while training and while in work. We were integrated in to the team well and treated as a member rather than a trainee.
The overall structure is good with a long future plan to give us time to plan things for our own time, sometimes things change lat minute but that happens in a company as big as this, can't be helped!
I get additional support at home with a maths tutor who helps with my C&G work, this is paid for by National Grid, its a very generous perk as I would struggle highly without it. The program is tight for the C&G and not as structured as we would like but this additional support helps me highly.
Plenty of support is given with regular updates from the team about work, I give updates to my TL who is well informed of what I'm doing and does everything he can to assist me in any problems I have.
It meets it very well, it is above industry standard and with the shares and pension available from the first day is stands you in good stead for the future such as a house. All travel for work is accommodated by NG and they issue a company van which is available to be used for personal use for a small fee.
There are plenty of business events to attend which interest some, there are sports facilities at our training centre also. NG offer lots of company discounts on high street stores and online including a very generous 20% off EE and Vodafone personal contracts.
Yes
Especially from a young age it is the best opportunity for growth in the country, in my opinion. There is plenty of support and the work is enjoyable, the benefits out weigh any cons. Not many people leave put it that way!
Sell yourself, anything you have done no matter how small makes an impact. Practical knowledge goes a long way even though it isn't necessary, something as simple as maintenance on your push bike, have a go!
