My role as an insurance broker includes talking and communicating with clients about their policies and needs on new policies or existing policies. I also talk and communicate with insurers to get the best policies and premiums for my clients as well as completing different admin tasks through insurers and Acturis which is our online filing system.
The skills I have learnt since starting my apprenticeship in September are being able to create PRQ’s (pre renewal questionnaires), developed my communication skills through talking to insurers and clients on the phone and in person. I have also learnt how to renew policies for clients and learn a lot about the insurance industries through my studies.
I am really enjoying my insurance broking apprenticeship programme as I feel it is giving me many opportunities to learn new information and new skills and also improving my communication and social skills as I am able to communicate with new people In the same industry as myself and also people who are in a similar situation to me.
I feel like there is a good level of organisation within the programme as I have been appointed a apprenticeship coach from Davie’s learning solutions who is there to keep track of my studying and how I am improving over time. In the office I also have a lot of support from my manager who gives me work daily to keep me busy.
In the office I receive a lot of support from the people I am working with such as my manager or people in my team. However I do have support from Aon as a whole sometimes but I haven’t had an issue yet to receive support from so I cannot say whether they are supportive in that way.
I feel like I have a lot of support from my training provider, we keep in touch weekly and have many different catch ups to talk about exams that are coming up in the future, my off the job learning hours that I have to fill in monthly and meet a requirement of hours and also just checking that everything within the job is going well.
I feel that having a training provider during my apprenticeship is beneficial as it splits up the time used for studying and the time, I spend doing office work that is set by my manager. I can perform better in my role from doing this as I am spending more time studying and doing learning modules that link to the work I am doing in my role.
In my office there aren’t many activities to be involved with, however, we have some occasional professional networking and social events that I involve myself in so that I can meet new people and better my understanding of insurance through people that have a lot of experience and knowledge of the subject.
Yes
I feel that Aon is an excellent company to work for that really values a colleagues need. I feel supported within my role and know that the company will provide help if I need it. I also think it has a great community of people who are diverse and different so that everyone feels included and relevant to the company.
The advice I would give to people applying at Aon is to be yourself and stay true to yourself. It is a great opportunity that opens different avenues for you in the future. I would say that everyone in the Aon community is welcoming and open to any person from any background and to always be confident in what you are doing.
