  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • day to day role involves helping out my immediate and wider team with adhoc requests. helping with risk control processes as per the company policies. I also help provide data extracts for those clients outside of the immediate team due to access issues. I also review operational risk issues as a controller and maintain a central tracker.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Some of the skills that I have further developed include my communication skills as well as organisational skills. I have also learn how to use my skills in a transferrable way as the tasks that I overlook develop and broaden to cover a wider scope. This naturally helps me to become more organised

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme and the productivity as it comes with a lot of learning opportunities. It would be great to have the flexibility to continue working from home like the rest of the team does and other apprentices do in other divisions. But overall great learning programme with space for improvement.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I believe though the programme is fairly structured there are several aspects where there could be better communication and structure/organisation. This is because there is no consistent approach with all apprentices in all divisions. Further to this, apprentices are often treated with a one size fits all approach in certain divisions in terms of expectations with regard to working style.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer provides a lot of support, especially during periods of sickness. This includes mental health which is crucial to take care of in order to complete the role successfully. Teams are more then sympathetic to any support that may be required and try to accommodate where possible to help employees.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Training provider can be quite last minute at times however overall communication is very good. Lecturers are available to contact for support and several different helplines and induction days are provided to give a further insight into contact points required when working towards your qualification. There are several platforms that support is provided on.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification really focuses on risk which is the team I am based in. There is a huge interline between the theory that is learnt in the sessions and the role that I perform which ultimately helps me to understand why I do what I do. I am able to better understand processes that I contribute to.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • My job place offers several societies and clubs which employees can engage with to interact with their hobbies and passions. They are very keen on diversity and inclusion in every sense of the word and have many societies representing this. We also have a gym and many networking opportunities via events.

  • 9a. Would you recommend UBS to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Overall the company is a great place to work in. Comparatively from my experience there is a lot more diversity and inclusion then other companies. I value this greatly and therefore feel I am able to express myself and enjoy the environment I work in comfortably whilst getting the job done.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to UBS?
  • I would definitely recommend staying organised and on top of things, reading and staying up to date with the news and exploring areas which you have a genuine interest in. You never know until you try. Be authentic and unapologetically yourself as there is no point in feeling miserable working somewhere you cant enjoy and be comfortable being yourself.
