  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • my daily job roles include assisting Client Service Advisors in my team with their renewals. Work tasks may be requesting claims experience, get the renewal report started, request terms from insurers, review terms, request binding instructions, review policy documents when these are received and then invoice the client followed by policy checking the docs and send these over to the client. During the stages in between I ring insurers if something is urgent, send emails to insurers and general correspondence with my peers and clients.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Absolutely! both professional and interpersonal skills. I have learnt how to conduct professional work that is made to a suitable standard before it gets sent to the insurer/client. i have learnt how to speak to insurers vs clients over the phone. I have also developed technical skills such as excel and industry programs such as Acturis.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Very much so! I have had the opportunity to grow my professional career and been able to meet so many interesting people. The programme offers a good mix of learning/ studying and the job itself. Since the restrictions easing off, I have been able to go into the office twice a week and that has had a really positive effect on my learning as well as getting to know my peers better.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My program is well structured from Aon's side - a good mix of off the job learning (approx 20% per week to revise for exams or do course work for the apprenticeship) and client work. I get to be involved with the clients that I am assisting on to the extent that I feel like I am very much a valuable member of the team.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received a decent amount of support throughout the apprenticeship with emphasis on the first months of it as I was working remotely. The team has been great and everyone helps everyone. I have received extra support when I needed it, especially leading up to an exam or towards the end of my apprenticeship where I needed to focus on my end point assessment. In regards to tasks, I have never been afraid to ask for help if I'm stuck.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I've got mixed feelings towards my training provider due to several issues with changes in coaches and delays in issuing my exam materials. Therefore, there have been a few obstacles along the way which have made me feel apprehensive towards them and I therefore cannot give a higher rating. My third and final coach was thorough and clear and she is what saves this review rating from being a solid one. Apart from that, the training provider was pretty shocking.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It gave me a jump start into understanding the insurance industry on a broader level. All exams, with emphasis on the first one helped massively. A lot of the learning came on the job but sitting the exams helped putting the job into context and what it entails on a daily basis. It also helped me seeing different sides of the business as one exam was in the legal and regulatory aspect of the industry, one in underwriting (writing and evaluating risk) and one in claims.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have been involved in the social impact project where we have helped a charity grow their donations. This has been a really good yet challenging project due to it being organized remotely and my peers are from different sides of the country. Despite this, it has been a really great experience and informative. I've not been involved in other activities but post covid, my team and I have been for lunches and after work drinks which has been really nice.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Aon to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Aon is a great employer that values and sees its employees. My team has been nothing but helpful throughout my apprenticeship and so has my line manager. There are several perks and incentives that we get throughout the year and another positive factor is that everyone can express themselves despite their religion, beliefs and dress sense

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Aon?
  • If you're applying for the higher apprenticeship scheme, make sure you do your research about the company, its values and ethos. During the interview, make sure you're yourself throughout - they go for personality more than experience and grades. It does not matter that you don't know anything about insurance, that's why you're here to learn!
