On a day to day basis, I start the day with a stand-up meeting to outline what needs to be done. I then work my way through a balance of project/client tickets and develop code for them, my university work, and a group project with others from my cohort.
Yes, I have learnt how to work with multiple new languages, such as Java, JS, React, CSS/SCSS and tools used in the industry such as Docker, Git etc. Alongside this, I am studying for a BSc in Software Engineering at university, which is a lot of personal studies and learning too.
We have such a diverse work culture and teams - so everyone can feel comfortable being themselves whilst working, as well as at our socials. There is so much support and is so much better than I ever thought it would be. I thorougly do enjoy both studying and working, really the best of both worlds.
I help to run the inductions for the new joiners, and I feel it is very well and clearly organised. There is a rota that outlines the 3 months of onboarding before being handed into the appropriate teams. There is a lot of support and training in the beginning, so clear lists are given.
Support is always there should you need it, and my PM and HR are always extremely helpful with all guidance and appreciate that everyone needs different methods of support - so the general attitude is always good. We are given a wide support network, with 1:1 buddies when you join, along with your PM and Line manager.
Queen Mary are a fantastic university and they are so helpful with our studies. They appreciate that we only study 2 days a week and so tailor our experiences so we get 2 full-on days of study, and help where we need it. I love the university side as I get all of the same benefits as being a normal student. We don't have dedicated tutors etc. but all of the staff are so helpful.
The theories learnt at university directly relate to what I do. Especially the programming modules, when the language I learn with lecturers is the language I use within my team. As well as providing extra information about how things work, we get specialised work-based modules by an industry expert which is made for our employer's work.
Yes, there are many different clubs inside and outside of work hours, both virtually and in person. For example, there is a lunchtime running club in the London office. We are also given volunteering hours to help NGOs and charities within working hours too, which is a great benefit to local communities.
Yes
It's a truly brilliant and supportive experience from the start. You are in a diverse and friendly team, that understand the pressures of studying alongside work and help you through the difficulties you may face. The pay is competitive, as well as a range of additional benefits to chose from.
Make sure you know KPMG's core values (on their recruitment website) by heart and know how to explain how you have already demonstrated these. The whole recruitment process is based around these, so be prepared to link your answers to interview questions to the values listed there as this will help.
