Test engineer. I am in a team who are in charge of safety and durability testing the interior of the cars, ranging from seats to centre console. The test include things like durability of components to environmental tests to crash testing and airbag deployments. Traveling with the company as well is a big part of my job which i have been lucky enough to do.
Everyday on the job i have learnt and seen something new. I was already skilled with tools although the experience with them here has helped me further this and turn it into a developed skill. I have used a lot of prior knowledge although i have still leant a lot of new things about engineering
For me this job has always been a dream job. I have wanted to test cars ever since i was young, i love being around luxury and high end cars and i now am working with them everyday. The job itself is brilliant although the Uni does let it down quite a bit because of how much work we are given on top.
Bentley have been completely flawless the entire time. I have been given all of the support adn help that i have needed as well as the best manager and mentor i could ask for. Despite this Warwick uni has been very poor and not very well structured and the standard of teaching is also very difficult to understand why it is given the merit it has
My company is always wanting to get in touch and know what i am up to with my uni work and personal life in a good way. My manager and mentor for one example both have weekly dedicated meetings on catch up with each other and to discuss how i am progressing and getting along within my role.
This is like i say the very downfall of the apprenticeship. Warwick despite giving me a good mentor have been extremely poor in this regard. They do not give me the support or knowledge that i believe is needed for the assignments and exams we have to carry out. On top of this the consideration that we have a full time job is over looked to no end.
I have been looking at many things which i experience within my job and many which don't. I have no problem with the modules which we are taught at Warwick although i do think that it would be better if we were given more bespoke modules to fit our jobs, i feel we would learn more.
There is yes, I am yet to participate in anything apart from our Christmas party although i know that Bentley do offer programs through the sports division and through the company's FTSE division who are always setting up new and exciting things for example go karting and other team building/networking opportunities.
Yes
I have been here for 6 months and already they have shaped my future and given me experiences which most employers could only dream of giving a new starter. The opportunity to move around in the business is priceless and means even if you start somewhere that you don't want to be there is always some where you are free to go and try and work with.
Be confident and open to anything they throw at you! The interview is difficult but if you can really show your passion and how much you want to work for them and how much you want to shape the future of automotive engineering they will take you under their wings and give you an opportunity to do so.
