I am an assistant manager. I assist my manager on the day to day running of a busy flagship pub. Looking after the team and guests ensuring everything runs smoothly. I help with stick counts, Rita’s, banking, administration, beer orders anything that helps with behind the scenes. I also run shifts open and close the business.
Yes I did my level 3 apprenticeship first and was promoted to shift supervisor, I then started my level 4 and was promoted to assistant manager. I think without having done the apprenticeship I would still be a team member as I didn’t have the right qualifications for the roles.
I have to admit it was difficult at times to try to fit it around my role but really rewarding and really enjoyable. Learning each subject in turn let me delve deeper into each one. I particularly enjoyed the law and legislation topic and found that one quite interesting. The knowledge I received will stay with me for life.
Very well organised. Mine was put into individual topics and each month my trainer would choose a topic for me to study. We would then go over the work and have a mock professional discussion about it preparing me for the end point assessment discussion. I liked how each subject was separated made it easier to learn.
Truthfully I didn’t receive any support from my employer. I had to do all my learning training and discussion in my own time on top of my work hours. I did find this difficult to manage. At the start of the course I was told 20% of my work would be on the job but I never received that. I was never asked about my apprenticeship or had a discussion about it.
Loads. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] was fantastic without his support I think I would have given up. He was really knowledgeable, so helpful, and on top of that would listen and help with any worries I had in work at the time always relating it to a subject we had covered providing me with more learning. I went through change of management In work and the subject and work [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] set me helped me in real time to understand what was happening within my team. He was brilliant.
100% the information that I have learned has helped me each day that I work. It gads helped me with my leadership skills with my team, planning my days, forecasting and team management, doing my risk assessments, knowing the health and safety to follow. Without it I wouldn’t have half as much knowledge.
No unfortunately we don’t have any after work activities. It would be wonderful if there was, but work and the hours that we have to work seem to dominate most of my week, I have a family and that takes the other half there isn’t much time left for anything else. If there was it would be great to have some team building but there isn’t.
Yes
Because there is an opportunity to grow within m and b and have a career. There’s so many businesses that you can work in, most current employees go from one pub to another doing a few years in each learning as much as they can. There’s a lot of room for training and development and to progress/promote. The quality of training is second to none. I would though tell my friend that it dies take away your social life with the hours that you do but in most pubs like at mine that ends up being your social life when your at work talking to regulars they become your friends along with your team.
I would tell them about the opportunity of apprenticeship within m and b and to apply for one as it helps with your role you can do it alongside it. I would tell them to enjoy the experience and to work towards promoting every few years. To do the training provided and get the most out of their role.
