I am a fabricator within the Devonport Royal Dockyard in which my typical day to day role involves the fabrication, assembly, fitting and manufacturing of various steel components for warships. This can vary a great variety to the fitting of exhausts or vent systems to the fabrication of walkways and handrail dependent on the stage of the refit.
During my time in this apprenticeship I have built on my previous experience in terms of my old job role as a plastic fabricator at another company as well as developing some new skills. A good example of this is the new welding techniques that I use regularly to tack weld pieces together.
On the whole I enjoy my role massively due to the ever changing nature of the work which continuously challenges me with various problems. This allows me to draw on my previous experience or knowledge of a slightly different area to think of a solution that will be fitting for the issue at hand.
I am very happy with the way in which the apprenticeship is structured due to the fact that their is a clear timeline to follow with targets that detail what steps need to be completed in order to progress through the stages of the apprenticeship and receive the benefits of completing each phase.
My employer is very supportive in the fact that there is always a contact available should you have any issues, whether this be a personal or work related issue. I have experienced this support directly as I suffered some impactful family issues and my employer was extremely understanding and helpful getting me through that time.
I was very happy with the support I received.
I believe it helps me greatly.
Yea there are some events that are available for participation.
