Leading and running the restaurant on a day to day basis, looking after well being of staff, personally responsible for training, visits, cleanliness and all staff. We fill out PRs and probations, as well as dealing with external and high ranked complaints, as well as people coming into the store. We sometimes do career fairs etc. Essentially a run around for my business manager.
I think I have learnt more how to manage my time, especially since I don’t get paid overtime etc. I have become the youngest assistant ever in my franchise, and because of that i have gained more confidence and people skills. In this i also had to learn how to stand up for myself.
I really like the learning aspect of my programme. However, being promoted quite early has been quite stressful and made me enjoy it a little bit less since I’m always rushing to get all my work done. I come home and have to do a lot of my apprenticeship work then.
Externally, the programme is set up very well. I would just like a bit more information and communication from hq, letting us know when things will be taken place. However each store runs it differently and as i am the first degree Apprenticeship they have it can be messy at times, especially considering my extra work.
My business manager is my mentor, and although he trys to spend time with me, we have argued many times over the matter as he is always to busy or trying to get me to do something else than study. He kind of ignores my franchisee in that I always get dragged in to do work on my study days.
We have monthly meetings, where she comes into store ans she is always available too email which is great! She provides me with feedback often and we get along very well. I feel she is approachable and wants me to succeed which is nice. The only thing i dont like is their website.
I am learning the key points of hospitality and how they work, so I can retain customer loyalty, replace structures in the restaurant you uphold it even better and overall improve the experience that both crew and customers will have in our McDonalds, especially as an assistant manager where i can implement the changes easier.
Sometimes we have Christmas parties and summer bbqs, however apart form that we do not have any social events within the franchise. These have lost been cancelled due to COVID the past couple of years. However, higher managers sometimes have conferences in London and Birmingham which they can attend and do social networking.
Yes
It’s a good starter job and can be an easy career option if you have the drive and want to work for it and take on and care for others. It also has many opportunities to develop no matter what, never if you’re only staying short term so.
Always ask as many questions as you want, each McDonald’s is different so pay will be different, have in mind what you would want to do in the store (kitchen, front), take into account the vision and mission of the company, the friends you make will be great but dont get to attached as they have a high turnover rate.
