  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • developing code, working with a tea to produce software that provides value to clients. Mainly working doing frontend work as I understand this more, making changes to the platform that end users would be able to see. I am studying 20% of the time for a degree also. The programme was level 4 -6 and was 4 years. I started in 2019.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • i have developed existing coding skills and other technical skills such as python and sql in the workplace and through degree modules. I have become more aware of soft skills and the importance of these, such as presenting with confidence. It is a good learning experience to be able to apply knowledge to work and learn how real life working is.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy being able to gain experience and study too. I enjoy coding so my role at work is interesting to me and will hopefully allow me to gain more understanding and knowledge of what that occupation will be like (software developing). I enjoy the flexibility and being able to spend some time in different roles to find the one that suits me most.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is quite new but is progressing through feedback and understanding. The study days are well structured and there is an apprenticeship team which helps. I find sometimes having one day a week to work on two modules is a bit tight but am able to complete assignments. There is involvement and management between us, the training provider and EY so this helps with organisation and structure.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • good counselling and mentoring which is good and access to talk with leadership within the team. This allows us to give feedback and for us to raise issues. there are multiple networks and EY is a large global company so there is someone to reach out to. the culture is very helpful.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • recently the training provider was changed and this one seems to go by the rules a lot more. The extension period is reduced, from the previous training provider an extension would be about 2 weeks however the current gives 5 days. There is less time for us to complete a draft to receive feedback on assignments also.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • the modules can be aligned which helps to apply to my role and I am able to think about how or if any topics are being implemented at EY. I am gaining knowledge about different areas of technology which could allow me in future to be able to use this. I may be able to understand other roles in EY.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • there are socials within the team and there are lots of networks as EY is a large company. I have joined a couple of networks and can attend socials with the team which helps with getting to know colleagues. The training provider also has networks as well which is useful.

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The culture at EY is collaborative and understanding and there are lots to be involved in. There are opportunities for growing or creating something on a large scale because of the talent and reputation of the company and your ideas can be heard. if you have a point you can raise it and get it heard/implemented.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • when interviewing one aspect could be whether you would fit in with the culture.. Definitely mention points such as working in STEM as a woman or being of a minority ethnicity. Show that you have got some knowledge to bring to the company/ you are willing to work hard. keep networking if you get it.
