I am an apprentice civil engineer, I work on highways. Day to day i'm doing a lot of setting out, doing quality like checklists. The setting out involves pinning with levels, setting levels for drainage, checking levels around site, completeing as-builts and using auto cad and creating as - built surveys of the job
I have learnt a number of skills so far on my apprenticeship. Mainly the use of engineering equipment and setting out, going from no idea how to use anything to looking after gangs on site on my own and setting out areas on my own. Also working with and monitoring/supervising gangs
I am thoroughly enjoying my apprenticeship, I've worked with so many great people and learn so many things, and actually being in the work place and experiencing the work day by day really accelerates your knowledge and skills of the job you are learning about in university. The programme as a whole is great
Really well structed, I attend work 4 times a week and university once a week. For me, this is the perfect work/uni balance, I definitely learn more by psychically doing the job so learning on site and in the classroom really brings that learning to life and also helps with my studies
I receive a lot of support from mine, they are really supportive of my studies and always give me the time if I need it for coursework and exams, they like to ask how i'm getting on and if works ever overwhelming me. It creates a great balance for me
Quite a lot, we have semester meetings between my uni and work with myself, targets are set and each semester we have to comment on how we are achieving them. We also have to log how we are achieving our 20% off the job training which is a part of our apprenticeship programme
during my engineering surveying I have learnt about levelling a lot, this has helped at work, especially in my earlier days at work when I was still learning the basics of setting out. A lot of the mathematics side of my modules have also helped me at work during my setting out
Yes, we weekly play football, all the lads come down from about 3 different sites and we all play, this is really good for our teambuilding and also speaking with people you wouldn't normally speak too, improving my networking too. It has also helped with my communication skills, c
Yes
I think it is a great company with so many opportunity to grow and learn. They make you feel like an integral part of the team and you get given a lot of responsibility and they trust you with them. Balfour Beatty will definitely grow you as a person and in your job roll
Don't be afraid, you can always move around in the company to different roles if you want to change. They are a massive company with loads and loads of different roles and opportunities. I really recommend working for them, not just as an apprentice but any level or role
