  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I took part in further pre-order meetings and other meetings where certain subcontract packages were discussed, which I really enjoy. This allowed me to have a now better understanding of these jobs that take place on highway construction projects. Additionally, I took part in another virtual induction which included the highways director who oversees all highway projects that take place in the southern region

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very Organised I Updated my performance development reviews which were due to be reviewed come the end of the calendar year. I also had my making safety personal training course which was very beneficial as it’s really emphasised how important it is to be safe on a construction site because if not the consequences can be very severe.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager always checks my progress and gives me full support as, I also got to witness A commercial tender handover as well as an operational tender handover which was really good to be involved in and witness. Also there were reviews of packages that I had been handling by my manager so it was beneficial that they all came back completely fine and there were no complaints.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The last week was a very busy week I took part in another training course but this time about NEC4 Contracts as that was something that was slowly being brought into the contracts in construction so it was interesting to get the introduction into these different types of contracts and see how they are different to NEC3 contracts which I had previously learnt about. I received a certificate for attending this course which is universally recognised according to the CECA South West

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • , I was placed in charge of overlooking five different subcontractors by my manager I felt very proud of being allowed this kind of responsibility and made sure, I will be thorough when dealing with these subcontractors and taking notes on how they progress with their various jobs. One of the first things I had to do was ask for their liability insurance as well as sending out a payment notice for the works that had taken place over the last month. Through giving me this responsibility it allows me to perform at the best of my ability.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I was in fact meant to go conference trip away to Manchester for placement students however this had to be delayed due to there being a certain mishap in the students that were meant to go however whilst not going it allowed me to take part in a weekly redness review which showed us how ready we were for the forthcoming schedule. Due to covid it has been tough but i have still gotten involved where I can.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think it is a company that exposes you to the reality of the industry and this is important for a persons development to get full insight to what goes on which you may not get at university. I attended a meeting which was one for looking at the application for payment for the stage previously and a forecast for the stage we were about to embark on. It was good to see the progress which had taken place before my arrival and also how the project is being planned for the future. it also gave me a larger insight into planning and how that takes place in the industry.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
  • In my opinion it is all about selling yourself as best as possible, try to find what will differentiate you from the rest of the crowd and try to put your best foot forward. Balfour Beatty will always give you a chance if you are driven and have a hunger to learn and make the best of yourself. Try to show that as best as possible in the application process.
