  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Responsible for contract administration to Subcontractors and Subcontractor payment/certifications for works complete. I also provide commercial support to senior quantity surveyors with complex subcontract packages; this entails writing contractual documents, site measures and assessments of works and when required.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My communications, confidence and professionalism has skyrocketed since being on my placement. I have also refined my analytical thought process and reflective thinking when assessing and certifying subcontract works. Due to me being responsible for managing my own workload I have become very organised and reliable.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme provides me with amazing opportunities to learn and grow. The only negatives is sometimes work can be onerous tasks and I have had to move away without financial support.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Coronavirus might have had an impact on this but initial meetings have been postponed on several occasions and all of training has been online which is hard to engage. But Balfour Beatty seemed to be moving back into face to face working which is how things used to be.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • In my job role there is a lot of independence, however when required I can go an ask for help from more senior members of staff. They also support me in providing opportunities that I need to grow such as enrolling myself onto courses.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Internal Balfour Beatty qualifications are independently complete however we have no time pressure to not do them in our work day. However Balfour Beatty gives me no support in regards to my external university degree

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The courses that i have undertaken at Balfour Beatty have increased my scope of knowledge n areas such as Contractual procedures and methods of construction which ultimately feeds into the bread and butter of my daily responsibilities.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Balfour Beatty always offer charity activities and staff often organise a meal. A couple of times a year as well members of the business group meet for a discussion. Pre Covid Balfour Beatty would run holidays to staff such as a ski holiday.

  • Yes

  • For anyone in the construction industry Balfour Beatty is an amazing reference and can provide arguably the best foundations for career growth; this is due to a wide range of works covid in their projects and amazing colleagues to teach and challenge your abilities


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
  • Network with professionals already working within the business on LinkedIn and Career open days as a good word can set you apart from competing candidates. Also be open to move away/try new things as flexibility makes you more employable.
