My role involves estimating, measuring drawings and site works to manage change, assessing Compensation Events from subcontractors and managing Compensation Events to the Client. The role also involves being responsible for and managing subcontractors and their respective applications for payment to make payment for site works.
Have developed measurement and estimating skills through working in various departments within Balfour Beatty. Through attending University one day a week this has helped me to further understand tasks in work and my understanding of the role.
I have enjoyed the programme and the company culture, I feel that there are lots of opportunities to experience different roles within Balfour Beatty and to understand how the roles collaborate with each other.
The programme is structured in terms of University and the modules being delivered on a weekly basis.
I feel supported by my manager and the commercial team I have been working alongside for the majority of the time on the programme. I do feel it would be beneficial to have a mentor type role to discuss progress and next steps on a more frequent basis.
My University has been supportive throughout the programme and are available to assist with queries.
The University side of the programme has been useful in supporting my role but it focuses on the building side of construction and JCT contracts and some of the modules taught do not seem relevant for the future. It would be useful if the course was tailored towards civil engineering.
There have been various school visits, buddy meetings where I have been a buddy to two new employees.

I am thoroughly enjoying working at Balfour Beatty and the apprenticeship route to gaining a degree qualification. I have developed my knowledge and understanding of the QS role further than what can be taught solely in a classroom environment.
I would advise people to research the various opportunities Balfour Beatty offer including placement opportunities and to research the company before undertaking any interviews. The placement opportunities provide individuals of a solid grounding to a specific role which is useful in understanding if it is the career for you.
