I am on the Capgemini Higher Apprentice Program. This is a sponsored degree and apprenticeship that offers Software Engineer roles in the business, where I work on Project and complete assignments for my apprenticeship/University courses. It is an IT software developing role that allows me to learn on the job and through Apprenticeship workshops. I am employed full time to work on a project, with salary. This work compliments my degree and apprenticeship as I can learn new skills whilst working with Colleagues, which helps me complete assignments. The Higher Apprentice course lasts over 5 years, upon receiving my degree I then continue to be a full time employee with Capgemini.
New skills in Software Development and Test. New Programs such as SQL, Unix, PVCS, Remedy. New languages such as SQL and basic java training. Developed communication and business practise skills.
The program has given me such a great opportunity where I can not only work and gain experience in the business on a project. I can also study for an apprenticeship and degree AS WELL AS earn a salary. Having all this given to you has given me confidence and self worth. It is extremely enjoyable as everyone provides you with experience and mentoring. Working in the business makes you feel less like a student, but more of an indiviual working in real life.
Being given an opportunity for a sponsored degree makes me feel very valued. It is something most people pay through the teeth for. Also being able to work in the business and take on real life projects makes me feel utilised and gives me confidence.
The program is well structured, with basic training for the first few months, before sending off into project areas to join teams. There are also monthly Programme reviews and updates.
Support from QA in the apprenticeship side is fantastic. Visits monthly and good communication.
Capgemini provides support for me every day, through my mentoring and other team members. The experience they can pass onto you is very valuable and you learn new skills every day on project. Any issues I have I feel comfortable raising with either my team leader or reviewer.
The salary for my first year is very good. Especially for my age. I have no complaints, and i only hope it continues to grow so i can start my own life.
Opportunities outside work are vast. Whether it be sports and social, or events such as training / capabilities. The university course is a great way to gain a qualificiation.
