On a day to day basis i work in the toolmaker section of the tool room where dies are brought in either because they have a fault or because they are scheduled maintenance. The first part is opening up the die a cleaning it down before inspecting a repairing the die, after which we test out the die in one of three test dies before closing up and filling out the paperwork.
Learnt how the individual dies operate and the different ways they are pieced together, i have also learnt how to operate the presses safely and efficiently. Finally i have learnt how the dies are documented correctly. It has been interested learning these skills from the many other experienced toolmakers within the toolroom.
I enjoy this program very much after the bad experience at college previously it was a breath of fresh air having someone in your corner to back you up and help ensure the college experience is what is required. The people i have worked with a nice and always eager to help to ensure you achieve what is needed.
The company is very well organized and even when trouble crops up such as trouble with suppliers or political trouble in other countries there is always work that the company can do which is then done to boost the efficiency within the long run of the organization. Each job has easy to follow paperwork that ensures all the work required is completed.
Our employer is very supportive and happy to help us out with any troubles we have either at work or at home, instances of this include the recent issues we had with the new workwear where our employer continued to chase them up every time they failed to deliver. They are very supportive.
On the educatiojn side of things our training provider ensures that we are always on track and that all work being submitted is to the correct standard. This is achieved through weekly meetings between our training providers and the college where they get feedback from all the lecturers from how we behave in class to our grades on assignments or other course work.
The qualifications whilst do cover some of the basic aspects of our work are more valuable to other area's as only hand fitting and welding units are really applicable to the roles of a tool maker as these skills are most used. other units learnt such as math's are more useful for design or management sections however these units do open up those possibilities .
There are many possibilities from school events, newsletters and TV programs that help network different plants, in addition to these are are other outdoor bigger events such as the mountain challenge where teams hike across mountainous terrain. Whilst these events are possible some have been restricted due to an ongoing pandemic.
