  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On the day to day I do activities to assist the business as a whole. For example, I use various forms of IT (SAP, Excel) , I communicate with people at all levels of the business (from other apprentices up to the Managing Director) and I learn about the company (eg. stakeholders).

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt lots of new skills such as how to use IT software that I had not come across before, such as SAP. I have also learnt lots of soft skills such as how I should communicate with different people depending on their role in the business and on the situation.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my apprenticeship, in particular the work side of things. Doing an apprenticeship allows me to continue learning and extend my opportunities without having to go to university. It allows me to build both my confidence and real-life experiences. However, the way that the learning side of the apprenticeship is could be improved by having more structure.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The work side of my apprenticeship is well structured as we get the chance to move all over the business every 4 months. This is good as it lets us see all sides of the business and get a stronger and wider learning experience. However the college side of my apprenticeship is very poor. We only get 1 college lesson per month, restricting us from learning what we need to. This needs to be improved.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a good amount of support at work via my employer. I feel like we get supported by all levels of the business. For example, we get 1 to 1s with our training managers, we also get 1 to 1s and reviews from our placement managers. On a wider scale, we get support from high up in the company from schemes such as our benefits scheme.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider is Yeovil college and I feel like I get very minimal support from them. I feel as though we do not get enough time learning nor get enough material to support us. Most of the time I feel lost on the educational side due to these issues.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • To an extent it provides me with some very basic business knowledge. However most of my knowledge and learning for my apprenticeship as been from my work placement and not from my training provider. I think that we would be better off with the company as our training provider instead. My training provider has not taught me much about business.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are lots of extra curricular activities to get involved in at work such as STEM committees, trainee committees etc. I am in a committee that raises money for charity but also puts on social events for other trainees on site. I have been out for meals and been to wellness events with this group and its a great way to make friends and connections at work.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Leonardo to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Leonardo is a great company to work for, with very reasonable core values. Leonardo will support you throughout your career and has lots of options to move forward. I feel like the company has lots of varied job roles so there is something for- nearly- everyone. They also have apprenticeships at different levels.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Leonardo?
  • Do your research before applying and before an interview so that you have some basic background knowledge of the company beforehand. Keep on open mind to learn about anything and everything. Get involved with ever opportunity there is.
