  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Job role will vary from department to department. As a degree apprentice with a mechanical bias, it is up to the apprentice to decide which departments they wish to enter for 3/6 month rotations. This can vary from project management to technical design, however you will be given the necessary training and support on entering each department as well as a high level of responsibility.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt program management skills where I have experienced how an international multi million pound company operates regarding to business functions. Engineering project management skills, managing aircraft engineering activities to support aircraft build. Configuration management skills to ensure that as the design evolves this is reflected on the aircraft. And technical engineering skills in relation to structures, air frame systems, electrical across multiple platforms.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Due to the variety of placements, you will experience something within the company that you will enjoy. Along with department work as a trainee you will be given opportunities to get involved with STEM activities. The support from the training department allows for a complete experience to ensure that all trainees are looked after.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Although the framework of the trainee scheme is set out, with set inductions, departmental rotations, college/university days etc. The day to day is fairly unorganized, with lack of staff to support NVQ, and last minute communications. However each trainee is assigned a training manager who they can discuss issues with, as well as a departmental manager who you will have an induction with prior to joining the placement.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support will stem from a range of individuals. Within the trainee team you will be assigned a direct manager who will support you with any issues. Also there will be a mentor which is assigned, the mentor is part of a senior leadership team who will be able to guide you on your career. And a department manager will be assigned who will be able to support you with any departmental work.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Although the structure is in place for managers to support regarding training. Any feedback which is given (constructive criticism) is rarely acted upon. The college/university days are very poorly structured, and the general consensus is a lack of enjoyment from trainees. Teaching is poor and a large amount of time is required to complete assignments.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • University/college training is highly un-related to department work. A lot of modules/assignments are based on fixed wing aircraft, where as Leonardo is a rotary wing company. However the rotations through departments allows you to build contacts and understand all of the applications and systems to aid with all job roles.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is an annual trainee event which celebrates trainees at Westlands Leisure center. However on a day to day it is the responsibility of the trainees if they want to get involved with additional events such as STEM events. This may be school visits, organizing work experience, on site visits and tours etc.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Leonardo to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The company is unique due to being the only rotary wing manufacturer in the UK which designs, develops, builds, tests, and flies on one site. Therefore there is a variety of departments to join and experience different things. A lot of responsibility is given to the trainee which is good, and allows you the freedom to choose what you want to do.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Leonardo?
  • The application process is difficult with a large number of applicants for a small number of spaces. The process is a CV, followed by a aptitude test, and then interview. My recommendations is to research about the company and its vast legacy as well as be open to trying new experiences. Always ask questions and seem engaged and the managers and departments will provide reciprocal engagement.
