In my current placement, I am responsible for investigating any electrical problems that arise from the certification of the AW101 rig, and producing design solutions to address these problems ready for sign-off for servicing the rig.
I have learnt or developed the following skills; - Problem-solving - Electrical testing - Electrical circuit design theory - Electrical manufacture - Working as part of a team to deliver a project - Analytical engineering - Use of electrical design software - Planning and logistical management - Ordering of electirical parts -
Really enjoy the programme. Am able to develop a range of new and existing skills whilst completing varying tasks regarding the design and certification of the AW101 rig. Entrusted with responsibility to undertake tasks in a lone capacity, but also gain the benefits of working as part of a team.
There is a well-defined pathway for the completion of the programme, specifically with the completion of the degree programme (i.e. university, college, assignments, NVQ qualification etc.) Organisation of placements is left to the apprentices to arrange themselves, allowing them to go to areas most beneficial for their development.
NVQ qualification is supported closely through appointment of a NVQ assessor. Each trainee is assigned a mentor to provide support and guidance. Members of staff are approachable at all times to support wherever neccessary. Training department provide specialist support to resolve any issues.
Yeovil College have provided continued support throughout the completion of the HNC and HND. Plymouth University have been exemplary in the way that they have undertaken the degree thus far, with support at every opportunity to ensure we are well-equipped to do well.
The completion of the qualification has improved and developed a key range of skills that I have utilised in my job role. In particular, the development of circuit and control theory has enabled me to understand the way in which electrical circuits function.
The extra-curricular activites at work are the best part of the apprenticeship IMO. The AWASA committee put on a range of activities for trainees to get involved, including; football, curry nights, quiz nights, yearly dinners etc. There is something there for everybody to enjoy.
Yes
The apprenticeship is one of the best around, with a programme that gets the best out of people, and enables them to get qualifications geared towards their profession while enjoying it along the way.
Make sure you give your all to showcase the best version of yourself to the company, be confident and honest-talking, and build relationships. You won't regret applying!
