I work within the audit department which involves being at client sites completing the necessary audit testing. This involves gathering evidence that supports the figures in the financial statements. I usually work in a team as an Audit Junior alongside a senior and a semi-senior.
I have had to learn to us the appropriate software (APT which is the audit software and Caseware which is used for building accounts. I have developed my skills in client service as offering a high level of client service is at the pinnacle of BDO. I have also completed 4 exams so far within the ICAEW to develop my knowledge of accounting.
I feel my programme is really good for learning a career whilst studying and earning money. However, I find the 'apprenticeship' side ie the 'Diploma in Audit' somewhat lacking. The workbooks we need to complete are in no way useful for development. I think they are designed for a much lower age group and cover topics studied in school, for example "how to insert a new slide in a powerpoint, complete a health and safety presentation" etc.. The ICAEW CFAB exams I do however enjoy, I feel that they are challenging and support the work I do on the job.
I think BDO has a good support network for trainees and managers take an active role in ensuring bimonthly meetings are held to discuss any issues. However, I think that sometimes school leavers can be undervalued. For example, BDO has started a new policy whereby on completion of my apprenticeship I will then have to wait another year before sitting any more exams. All school leavers in BDO offices around the country challenged this [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]
I think the programme is well structured with a timetable for exams and the workbooks for the diploma. However I do think that sitting 6 computer based assessments in 2 years is rather unnecessarily dragged out and feel we are capable of being more challenged which would better suit us for going on to complete ACA whereby we will be sitting 3 written exams at once which is quite a large jump up.
BPP offers a good level of support for exams and the online learning portal for self-study is really helpful. However, we have had issues with them not sending out college books on time. We are meant to have study materials 6 weeks prior to exam. This is not the case, even with me emailing and chasing several times I have been waiting for the appropriate materials which has meant I have less time to study then I should have. The BPP side for the diploma study is less helpful, as mentioned above I find this element more of a box-ticking procedure rather then aiding my development in any way.
I think my employer is understanding and supportive with the diploma side of my studies and I have support with exams from colleagues who have already sat the exams who can offer advice. If I was struggling with exams I would be happy discussing this with my employer who would be able to offer guidance.
I think the salary is quite low for the job that we do. I have had other jobs that were a lot less challenging and time consuming but on a much higher salary. However I do think its is inline with other school leavers in the same position.
BDO offers a lot of opportunities for social activities outside of work. The audit departments holds monthly drinks as a thank you for the work we do and also holds 'Away Days'. There are also other activities to get involved with ie football clubs, marathons etc
Yes
BDO looks after employees and offers an enjoyable working environment. I think good support is offered for those in training contracts and those wanting to progress quickly in their careers.
Make sure you are aware of BDO's values before applying and are able to answer interview questions confidently. Research the job you are applying for in detail to make sure that you are aware of what kind of day to day work you will be doing and what technical knowledge is needed for this.
