  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I engage in placements, where I will work for different teams working towards the skills, behaviours and knowledge laid out in the apprenticeship standard and completing projects for the team in order to achieve this. I also attend college once a week to study for my degree.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed a lot of professional skills, communicating with other colleagues, giving presentations, and I have also have developed a lot of technical skills in the fields of cybersecurity and software engineering.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme a lot as I feel that I am taking control of the work that I do and the skills that I am developing, and I feel that I am developing well professionally while doing something I enjoy.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well organised, clearly laid out how the apprenticeship would work and what it would look like over the course of it.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My line manager is very supportive, and will be able to help with any problems, there is also access to a lot of resources, and people throughout the organisation to help you. There is a lot of emphasis on mental wellbeing and reaching out to others.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider gives a lot of support, and are quick and easy to contact via platforms like Teams.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Very much so, the work I do is in line with the apprenticeship standard, and the qualifications are also, so they are very much linked and allow me to perform better in my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, I am able to be part of my placement teams social activities and also within my apprenticeship scheme. We are also able to get professional memberships which provide opportunities for professional networks, events and talks that we can go to.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Defence Equipment & Support to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Very big organisation with a very well constructed apprenticeship scheme and a lot of opportunity and variety in the work, whilst also being fulfilling due to the sector that we are in. Lots of other companies that are partnered and locations all around the country.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Defence Equipment & Support?
  • Prepare and learn about the organisation as much as possible, the MoD is very large and can be complex so it is good to try and understand it as much as possible. In general, understand what is required from the role, and the more preparation the better.
